Based in our City Hall/Lower Manhattan office, the Mechanical Design Engineer plays a key role in the implementation of large energy efficiency capital projects. The ideal candidate will be a mid-level Project Architects to join our team with design experience in the commercial, industrial, and multifamily building sector design including drawings, specifications, and NYC Department of Buildings (DOB) filings. 

The candidate should have strong experience working in Revit, preferably for retail projects, and have strong technical expertise to work in all phases of a project including producing CDs. They will join a collaborative team that develops technical and design solutions from feasibility through construction.

Principal Accountabilities:

  • Architectural Registration and LEED accreditation is preferred.
  • NYC Local 11, Local Law 97
  • Daylighting Modeling (Radiance and other industry software)
  • Supervision and knowledge of Window Modeling with Therm
  • Perform site visits to document as-built conditions and prepare plans and specifications to reflect design scope
  • Work closely with various external stakeholders, such as clients, contractors, and utility companies to meet project goals and schedules
  • Collaborate with internal team members such as energy and control engineers, sales associates, and design team members to meet project and design goals
  • Review and revise shop drawings, perform construction administration duties, and support project close out efforts via commissioning and punch list creation activities
  • Manage NYC DOB filings with clients, expeditors, and contractors
  • Prepare renderings and supporting graphics for project presentation and sales efforts
  • Be the prime liaison between construction managers/general contractors, client/owner and AE teams Attend site meetings include scheduling, cost management, pre-installation, and bi-weekly meetings.
  • Review and interpret construction documents and develop and issue sketches related to field conditions and issues, coordinate the work with consultants and the project team.
  • Process, review and answer Requests for Information and submittals.
  • Resolve problems that arise on the job site, coordinate bulletins to the contract documents, make recommendations, and consult client/owner on all issues related to the project.
  • Monitor, review, and process closeout submittals and perform periodic QA/QC construction site visits, including substantial presence at the construction site.
  • Review payment applications and cost proposals.
  • Prepare daily and other reports.
  • Manage internal construction administration efforts and team.
  • Adhere to established on-site project procedures, safety program requirements and work rules.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, and Other Job Requirements:

  • Qualified candidates must have a bachelor’s in architecture. Master’s in architecture is preferred.
  • One to four years of RELATED design and retrofit experience
  • Possess or working towards NYS RA
  • Proficiency in AutoCAD, Bentley OpenBuidings Designer
  • Familiarity with NYS and NYC Construction Codes
  • Excellent interpersonal skills are essential. Must have strong client communication, teamwork, collaboration, and conflict resolution skills.
  • Proficiency in mechanical engineering design principles, practices, and methods
  • Familiarity with structural, electrical, and control engineering design principles, practices, and methods
  • Demonstrated ability to manage design projects through each project phase with close attention to project accuracy, quality, completeness, and schedule
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple projects and prioritize accordingly
  • Understanding of energy efficiency concepts and building science
  • Ability to apply visualization design tools to synthesize building and equipment information
  • Familiarity with Adobe Illustrator a plus.

The ideal candidate will have design experience with MEP (HVAC- R, Chiller Plant, plumbing, and electrical systems) in the commercial and multifamily building sector. They will join a collaborative team that develops technical and design solutions from feasibility through construction.

Principal Accountabilities:

  • Prepare construction documents for HVAC and plumbing design including drawings, specifications, and NYC Department of Buildings (DOB) filings
  • Perform site visits to document as-built conditions and prepare plans and specifications to reflect design scope
  • Perform load calculations, size, select equipment, and prepare detailed specifications for HVAC equipment such as chillers, boilers, heat pumps, air-handling units, etc.
  • Size hydronic, steam, and air distribution systems
  • Work closely with various external stakeholders, such as clients, contractors, and utility companies to meet project goals and schedules
  • Collaborate with internal team members such as energy and control engineers, sales associates, and design team members to meet project and design goals
  • Review and revise shop drawings, perform construction administration duties, and support project close out efforts via commissioning and punch list creation activities
  • Manage NYC DOB filings with clients, expeditors, and contractors
  • Prepare renderings and supporting graphics for project presentation and sales efforts
  • Design and release HVAC module in the heat pump system, which includes HVAC case and inside components such as heat exchangers, pressure/temperature sensors, and PTC heaters
  • Interface with thermal engineering and to characterize performance target of HVAC module, including airflow, cooling capacity, heating capacity, etc
  • Interface with attribute engineering to ensure vehicle-level requirements are met
  • Interface with vehicle integration and other affected cross-functional team, such as instrument panel (IP), to identify packaging space of HVAC case, conduct and support packaging study
  • Work closely with suppliers on case design, airflow analysis (numerical and experimental), and component sizing
  • Provide guidance and direction to suppliers through sourcing process, pre-production and production-phase development
  • Develop and draft engineering specs for HVAC case, heat exchangers, pressure/temperature sensors, and PTC heaters
  • Create DV (design verification) and PV (production verification) plans/procedures and coordinate physical testing to validate functionality and reliability of HVAC module per engineering documentation
  • Be the owner/leader to support technical delivery, design reviews, concept definition and resolution of HVAC module
  • Create production release plans and execute with no late release and no late parts for the build phase
  • Ensure project deliverables are understood in detail and resources planned accordingly for green gateway accomplishment 

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, and Other Job Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering from an ABET accredited program
  • One to four years of mechanical design experience
  • Possess or working towards NYS PE license
  • Proficiency in AutoCAD, Bentley OpenBuidings Designer
  • Familiarity with NYS and NYC Construction Codes
